Kazoos On Tour

This page lists performing groups who use kazoos in their shows on tour around the world.

I wanted to add my band The Mutton Daggers to your list of bands that use kazoos. We're a rock'n'rolly punk band from Madison, WI, USA and we use the kazoo in one of our songs. It's called "Oi Kazoo" and it's about how really cheap beer can make life more appealing. The kazoo takes the place of a rhythm guitar in this song. If I had a good recording I'd send it to you but we're still wrangling that one.

Thanks
Ben Bottles

Jug Band Music, with a South Texas Accent!

The Texas Jug Band is San Antonio's premiere jug band. They are a "Pure" jug band, using only traditional jugband instruments. They use no drumset (beyond washboard), electronic instruments, woodwinds, or brass, presenting a straight acoustic sound in front of microphones. They feature guitar, five-string banjo, harmonica, washboard, jug, washtub bass, and kazoo. Every multi-talented member plays a variety of instruments, often more than one a the same time!

T.J.B plays a mix of Southern Blues, Classic Country, and Old-time Jugband Songs, and Original Material, with a touch of Bluegrass. They play restaurants and bars in San Antonio and the surrounding Texas Hill Country, and often spend a Saturday afternoon entertaining the elderly in local nursing homes.

"Barefoot Larry" (Larry Collins) handles lead vocals, harmonica, washboard, kazoo, guitar, and lead vocals. Larry is a published San Antonio singer/songwriter, and former solo entertainer. The band's playlist features several pieces of his Country original material.

"Gator" Ron (Ron Raimey) blows the jug and sometimes plays washtub bass. He blows a sweet, deep jug, using his favorite half-gallon Corn Whiskey jug from the McCormick Distillery, Missouri.

Clem Perez is a wonder, doing guitar, five-string banjo, harmonica, vocals, and playing kazoo occasionally. Clem is a former solo entertainer, and has a Bluegrass background.

The band has a web site with samples of their music. It currently contains 5 samples, 2 of which are songs that use kazoo. The songs that use kazoo are "Shake That Thing" and "Diggin' My Potatoes", both of which are old-time jugband songs that were originally recorded in the 1920's.

Larry says these samples use a kind of a raw, "Growling Saxophone" kazoo intro on both songs, with the kazoo present in the rest of the song, but more subdued. The kazoo can't dominate the song, but we wanted it to make it's presence known in the beginning. Kazoos figured prominently in the old-time jug bands, especially The Memphis Jug Band. Kazoo figures prominently in jugband music, then and now.

These samples use: Guitar, Harmonica, Kazoo, Jug (as the bass) and Washboard (as the drums) for instrumentation. Some of the others use Washtub Bass and 5-string banjo.
